Diffuse Ultrasonic Sensors

Ultrasonic sensors that reflect sound directly off the object, detecting regardless of material or color.

A diffuse ultrasonic sensor measures distance by timing how long the sound wave it emits takes to bounce back off the object; unlike light-based sensors, it is unaffected by transparent, glossy or dark surfaces. Omron’s analog-output E4PA-N series and digital switch-output, separate-amplifier E4C-DS/E4C-UDA series, together with Telemecanique’s XXS series diffuse ultrasonic sensors, are used for detecting transparent packaging and liquid level. Output type (analog/switch) and sensing distance are chosen to match the application. Note: Panasonic’s FA sensor catalog has no current ultrasonic sensor (its one model is discontinued), so this card lists only Omron and Telemecanique products.

Telemecanique’s XX ultrasonic sensor family (formerly OsiSense) offers a wide choice of housings and outputs in diffuse mode: the cylindrical M18 XXS (up to 1 m, 4-20 mA analog or digital output, software configurable), the cylindrical M30 XXA (2 m, straight or 90° angled head, analog output), the fixed-range Ø18 digital XX5, the adjustable-range M30 digital NC+NO XX6, the flat 18×33×60 mm XX7 and the E2-certified, Ø54 wide-beam XXW54 for mobile equipment (3 m, 4-20 mA + PNP, Deutsch connector). Across the family, digital-output models cover 5 cm–8 m and analog-output models (4-20 mA / 0-10 V) 50 cm–8 m; the Ø18 and Ø30 level-monitoring models control two levels, emptying and filling (50 cm–2 m). The free Ultrasonic XX software sets operating mode, window area, hysteresis and echo options, and the synchronization feature prevents cross-talk between sensors mounted close together. The XXS and XXA models carry IP65/IP67 protection and cULus, Ecolab and E2 certifications.

Every XXS, XXA, XX5, XX6, XX7 and XXW54 model below is verified from the manufacturer’s current catalogue; analog (4-20 mA / 0-10 V) and digital outputs, M18/M30 cylindrical, flat and wide-beam housings.
