Which HIKROBOT product fits your application?

Product selection starts with the task. The table below matches common requirements to the relevant category and series; the exact model is chosen together based on the part, line speed and mounting conditions.

Camera, lens and lighting are chosen together

A machine vision system succeeds not because of a single product but because the camera, lens and lighting match each other.

Field of view and resolution

First define the size of the area to be seen (the field of view) and the smallest detail that must be captured. Together they give the required pixel count and therefore the camera resolution: the smallest detail should cover no fewer than a few pixels in the image.

Sensor size and lens format

The lens must be of a format that fully covers the camera’s sensor (e.g. 2/3″, 1.1″); otherwise the image corners darken. The lens resolution should not be lower than the camera’s. This is why HIKROBOT lenses are grouped by sensor format and resolution.

Working distance and focal length

The distance between the camera and the object, together with the field of view, determines the required focal length. For dimensional measurement, telecentric lenses are used to avoid perspective error.

Lighting

Contrast is often achieved with light rather than with the camera. Dome or coaxial light is preferred on shiny and curved surfaces, low-angle bar or ring light for edges and scratches, and backlight for silhouette and dimensional measurement. The light colour (red, blue, white, infrared) is also chosen according to the colour of the part. See lighting and light controllers.

Interface and processing

The camera interface (USB 3.0, GigE, 10GigE, CoaXPress, Camera Link, X over Fiber) is chosen by data rate and cable length; a frame grabber is added if required. Image processing runs on a PC with VM software or on VC vision controllers.
