HIKROBOT RGB-D Camera Selection and Field of View Tool

Enter the dimensions of the object and the camera mounting height to instantly see the HIKROBOT RGB-D (3D) cameras that see the whole object, and the field of view at its top surface and at the floor.

How does it work?

RGB-D cameras measure the depth of every pixel together with a colour image; they are used for box, pallet and part dimensioning, warehouse and parcel logistics and robotic picking.

Working range

Each model has a defined near and far measuring distance. The object’s top surface (mounting height − object height) must not be closer than the near distance, and the floor must not be farther than the far distance; otherwise part of the object falls outside the measuring range.

Field of view

The field of view grows with distance from the camera. The top surface of the object must fit within the field of view at that distance; a field of view that fits the object more tightly means a smaller area per depth pixel, i.e. more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is an RGB-D camera and where is it used?

RGB-D cameras measure the depth of every pixel together with a colour image. They are used for box, pallet and part dimensioning, warehouse and parcel logistics and robotic picking. The right model is chosen according to the object dimensions, the camera mounting height and the near and far measuring distances of the model.

How do I use the RGB-D camera selection tool?

Enter the length, width and height of the object and the camera mounting height above the floor (conveyor surface). The tool lists HIKROBOT RGB-D cameras that keep the whole object within the working range and fit its top surface in the field of view, tightest fit first. For each model it shows the field of view at the top surface and at the floor.

How do I set the working range and mounting height of a 3D camera?

Each model has a defined near and far measuring distance. The distance from the camera to the object top (mounting height − object height) must not be shorter than the near distance, and the floor must not be farther than the far distance. Otherwise part of the object falls outside the measuring range. The mounting height must be greater than the object height.

How does the field of view of an RGB-D camera change with distance?

The field of view grows with distance from the camera; the tool calculates it linearly between HIKROBOT’s near and far field of view values. The top surface of the object must fit in the field of view at that distance. A field of view that fits the object more tightly means more detail.
